After two vivid supporting performances this year – in Mother! and Murder on the Orient Express – three-time Oscar-nominee Michelle Pfeiffer is front and center in this poignant character study that devastated audiences at its Sundance premiere. Kyra, 50-something and recently divorced, has fallen into a pit of hopelessness: she can’t find work and her elderly mother, with whom she lives and whose pension supports them, suddenly dies. A supportive neighbor (Sutherland) is a welcome distraction but not a solution; facing the prospect of losing the apartment, Kyra makes some desperate and risky choices. Shot in a gritty Brooklyn neighborhood and in sunless rooms and bars where Kyra literally sinks into the shadows, the film is a daring and unvarnished attempt to portray the economic crisis plaguing American cities. Dosunmu, a Nigerian-born New Yorker, told Variety that he was inspired to tell a story about “the invisibility of the elderly and the disenfranchised” that he passed every day on the street. “A lot of people end up being there because of circumstances. Most people live one paycheck to another. What happens when you lose your job? You lose everything.” The film asks where is Kyra? She is everywhere…

It’s been years since we’ve been treated to a great Michelle Pfeiffer performance, and Where Is Kyra? finally gives her that platform. Eric Kohn, IndieWire

Rarely on film has the sheer debilitating exhaustion of poverty been so clearly portrayed. Pfeiffer is beautiful, but when we look at Kyra all we see is fatigue, anger, loneliness. – Bilge Ebiri, The Village Voice

Every frame is a tableau come to sumptuous life. And in Pfeiffer’s face Dosunmu found the perfect vessel. Whole scenes play just on her face even when other actors are present in the scene. It’s intimate yet unsettling… The Film Experience
