While filming in Europe, Jamaica and New York over a 10-year period, director Sophie Fiennes uses a cinéma verité approach to explore the many lives – performance, personal and public – of seminal New Wave icon Grace Jones. No archive footage, no talking heads, with lacquer but often without… this is a down-to-earth Jones in the daily now of her life: on a road trip across Jamaica, where her familial roots and the story of her traumatic childhood are uncovered; in the recording studio with Jamaican duo Sly and Robbie; jaunting to Paris to confer with frequent collaborator Jean-Paul Goude; at a disastrous rehearsal for French tv where she shows how sharp her tongue and her wit can be. Generously interspersed throughout the film is Jones performing her hit songs – “Love is the Drug,” “Pull Up To The Bumper,” “Amazing Grace,” “Hurricane” and “Slave to the Rhythm” – while strutting across the stage in 6 inch heels and striking the Amazonian-style diva poses that her fans adore.
“Pure energy, fierce, and empowering. If you want a rock-n- roll, sexy, feel good, empowering film, pull up to the theater in your most audacious outfit and get ready for the Grace Jones experience.” The Huffington Post
“This might be the first documentary with a credit for Corset Designer. Whatever mysteries Grace Jones conceals, one thing is for certain: we can’t take our eyes off her.” Thom Powers, Toronto Film Festival
