Viktor Jakovleski’s explosive little documentary is itself a firecracker of a film, merging spectacle and music into the kind of audience experience normally found in sports or concert films. For the people of Tultepec, a small Mexican town where three quarters of the residents work in pyrotechnics, the annual National Pyrotechnic Festival is an explosive celebration, unrestrained delight and real peril. Plunging headlong into the fire, BRIMSTONE & GLORY honors the spirit of Tultepec’s community and celebrates celebration itself.
Winner: Best Documentary Film Score, International Documentary Association

Language: Spanish
Subtitles: English

The perspective is of an observer sauntering through town who is suddenly thrust into the middle of a fearsome but exhilarating spectacle… Jakovleski and his team get some awesome visuals. This is a movie that repays being seen on a big reflective screen, one on which the image is projected. Because the light that comes off of the screen is strong and fierce. It’s exhilarating and scary at the same time.

Brimstone & Glory inserts itself directly into the preparation and execution of the festival with a disorienting closeness that gets at both the thrill and the terror. We meet a young boy who’s justifiably nervous about going into the family business, but nevertheless lights up at the spectacle, and is told he has “gunpowder in his blood.” The movie has adrenaline on its mind, too, as day prep turns to night frenzy, with a percussive score by Dan Romer and “Beasts of the Southern Wild” filmmaker Benh Zeitlin that signals a never-ending party.
