You don’t have to be either a surfer or an Irishman to be transported by this thoroughly engaging and visually stunning portrait of the ever-changing life in one of the Emerald Isle’s most beautiful surf towns. Arriving in Lahinch, County Clare in winter when the craggy northwest Atlantic coast is devoid of the golfers and surfer dudes that fuel its hard-scrabble economy, acclaimed documentary maker Ross Whitaker spent a year digging deep into the day-to-day lives of the residential surf community. Waiting for summer and the unique exhilaration that comes from riding Big Waves, they sustain themselves as farmers, fishermen and small business owners. The resulting film – at times intimate, at times epic – takes the audience beyond the bluster of the typical adrenaline-fueled extreme sports doc to create a very real portrait of the young and the old who make up this hearty band of sea worshippers. And when the surf’s up, “magnificent shots of roaring waves push all else out of the screen.” (Irish Times)
