LOVING

LIFF is pleased to present the Louisiana Premiere of the acclaimed new film LOVING.

Special thanks to Carole and Charlie Lamar on behalf of Together Baton Rouge for making this screening possible.

LOVING (USA 2016/123 minutes) directed by Jeff Nichols

Jeff Nichols (Take ShelterMud, Midnight Special) directs Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga in the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving who were arrested in 1958 for the crime of getting married. Their decade-long legal battle led to the US Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled in their favor, bringing an end to Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws. This inspiring film depicts Mildred and Richard's story of love and injustice with tenderness and insight.

The Civil Rights movement is still in its infancy when Richard (Edgerton), a construction worker, proposes to Mildred (Negga) on the same Virginia acreage where he plans to build their home. It should be the beginning of a blissful period, but trouble is already brewing. Alerted by a neighbor, county police break down the couple's door and drag them off to jail. They face this indignity with stoicism, but their sentence is worse: one year in prison, suspended only if they agree to leave Virginia and not return for 20 years.

Edgerton is taciturn but vulnerable, using body language to transmit both ferocious love and righteous outrage. Negga is nothing less than a revelation, conveying turbulent emotions with a glance. The subtle power of these performances is heightened by Nichols' refusal to reduce his story to speeches and high drama. Loving does not revisit history merely to flatter the present; rather, it recognizes how far we've come while implicitly reminding us how far we still have to go.

Special thanks to Focus Features.

DEEPWATER HORIZON (USA 2015/107 minutes) directed by Peter Berg

Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson star in this high-octane drama that tells the story of the largest oil spill in US history and one of the world's most devastating man-made environmental catastrophes. Riddled with tension and teeming with terrific characters, director Peter Berg's tale of corporate negligence and inspiring heroism offers a rare blend of big-budget spectacle and thought-provoking commentary.

It is April 2010. The Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling unit lays some 40 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. An air of unease hangs in the air as workers clash with British Petroleum executives over questions of due diligence. Eyes clearly fixed on the bottom line, BP's bullying bigwig (Malkovich at his snarling best) wants to expedite the tests and get drilling. Meanwhile, the veteran foremen (Wahlberg and Russell) are primarily concerned about their co-workers' safety - but will they defy orders when millions of dollars are on the line? While one can deduce what happens next, the getting there makes for electrifying cinema. Disaster strikes and the Coast Guard is called in, but it is up to those already aboard to save as many lives as possible before the entire rig goes up in flames.

Following his lacerating war film Lone Survivor, Berg reasserts his gift for marshalling vast resources, shifting seamlessly from scenes of verbal confrontation to bracing action set pieces. Through Wahlberg and Russell, he channels characters of working-class integrity that you can genuinely root for; not because they possess special powers but, rather, because they are ordinary people faced with an extraordinary crisis - and they refuse to back down.

Director, Peter Berg

Peter Berg was born in New York City and studied theatre at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has appeared in films such as Collateral (04) and Smokin' Aces (06) as well as on the television shows Alias (01-06), Entourage (04-11), and The Leftovers(14-). His directorial credits include Very Bad Things (98), The Rundown (03), Friday Night Lights (04), The Kingdom (07), Hancock(08), Battleship (12), Lone Survivor (13), Deepwater Horizon (16), and the forthcoming Patriots Day (16).
